なおこうした行動は、海中で魚が集まって移動するのと同じ現象だという。魚の場合には“ベイトボール(Bait ball)”と呼ばれており、サメなどの捕食者が近づくとまとまって素早く動き、攻撃を回避する。
「Science girl」さんが投稿した動画には、「すごい映像。トナカイって賢いんだね」「陸でも海でも同じ方法で身を守っているのか」「ずっと見ていると目が回っちゃいそうだ」などの声が寄せられた。
ちなみにあるユーザーが「トナカイは何に対して脅威を抱いているのかな?」と質問すると、投稿主は「恐らくドローンだと思う」と答えている。
