医師は「いつ、腸が破裂してもおかしくない状態だった」と話しており、おそらく男性は腸の中の圧力を感じる神経節細胞の先天的欠如により、大腸に大量のガスや大便が蓄積する「ヒルシュスプルング病(先天性巨大結腸症)」を患っていたのではないかとみられている。
5000人に1人の発症率と言われる「ヒルシュスプルング病」はほとんどが子供の頃に診断されるそうだが、稀に大人になるまで気付かない人もいるという。なお手術を受けた男性の容態は安定しており、回復が見込まれているとのことだ。
