同人権団体の理事は「お互いなしでは生きていけなかった」と明かしている。同人権団体は声明でこのように述べた。

「アフト氏は、70年間連れ添って彼を支えていた妻ユージェニーさんと手を取り合って亡くなりました。彼は最愛の妻をいつも『マイ・ガール』と呼んでいました。」

夫妻が亡き後、葬儀は非公開で執り行われたそうだ。

ちなみに米ニュースメディア『New York Post』では、オランダで安楽死は合法だが、カップルが同時に決断するケースは比較的珍しいことと報じている。しかし、オランダの公共放送局『NOS』によると、カップルが一緒に安楽死するケースは年々増えており、2021年には16組が同時に安楽死し、2022年には29組と前年より13組増加していた。
